River Niger’s Dark Evening: Stories of Loss and Survival in Kogi’s Boat Tragedy

Posted on October 2, 2025October 2, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on River Niger’s Dark Evening: Stories of Loss and Survival in Kogi’s Boat Tragedy

On the evening of September 30, 2025, the River Niger carried more than just a boat across its waters, it carried the hopes of farmers, traders, children, and families heading from Onugwa community to Olushi village in Kogi State.

By nightfall, that same river became a graveyard for many of them.

The boat, crowded with nearly 80 passengers, began its journey at about 5:40 p.m. The weather was calm, but the weight of human lives and goods pressed heavily on the vessel. Somewhere mid-river, the balance was lost. In seconds, the vessel tilted, water rushed in, and panic erupted.

For some, survival came by instinct. “I held on to a floating plank until the rescuers came,” one survivor recalled, shivering and drenched, his voice heavy with disbelief.

Twenty-four people were lucky enough to find their way back to land. Others were not. Fourteen bodies were recovered over the following days, wrapped in white cloths and laid before mourning families.

Forty-two more remain missing, swallowed by the depths of the river, leaving behind unanswered prayers and restless nights.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) moved quickly. Its Director General, Zubaida Umar, deployed rescue teams, joined by local divers, Civil Defence officers, the Fire Service, Red Cross volunteers, and the National Inland Waterways Authority.
They worked side by side, combing the waters, dragging nets, and comforting the grieving.

At the palace of Chief Patrick Arome, the traditional ruler of Onugwa, officials and mourners gathered. His compound became a place of weeping, consolation, and prayers for the lost.

“This is a wound that will take a long time to heal,” he said, his voice cracking.

The tragedy rippled far beyond Ibaji. President Bola Tinubu sent condolences, describing the mishap as “shocking and unfortunate.” Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo visited the affected communities, promising support. Yet, for those who lost loved ones, official visits were small comfort against the heavy silence left at empty dinner tables and the unending wait by the riverbank.

This was not Nigeria’s first boat accident, and sadly, it may not be the last. Overcrowding, fragile vessels, and the absence of safety gear such as life jackets remain recurring dangers along the country’s inland waterways.

For riverine communities, water transport is part of daily life, but each trip carries the unspoken fear of disaster.
The Ibaji boat tragedy is more than a statistic of 14 dead and 42 missing. It is a story of mothers who never made it home, of children whose laughter was silenced mid-river, and of survivors who will relive those harrowing minutes for the rest of their lives.

For the families still waiting, the River Niger has become both a provider and a thief feeding them with fish and water, yet taking away their loved ones in one cruel sweep.
