Residents of Ohatekwe Ukawu in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have banished a 20-year-old man, Damian Oforbuike, following the alleged killing of his mother in a disturbing incident that has left the community in shock.
According to multiple community sources, the tragic incident occurred over the weekend when Oforbuike reportedly attacked his mother, identified as Onyemaechi, with a machete. The assault led to her death, throwing the quiet community into mourning.
Following the incident, the suspect fled into a nearby forest in an apparent attempt to evade arrest. However, local youths mobilised in large numbers, combed the area, and eventually tracked him down to his hideout.
After his arrest, Oforbuike was reportedly paraded around the community before elders and residents collectively decided to banish him, warning him never to return.
In a video said to have been recorded during the parade, the suspect allegedly confessed to the act, attributing his actions to grievances with his mother. He claimed she refused to bathe him and declined to provide financial support to establish a barbing business for his brother who had completed his apprenticeship.
The councillor representing the area, Maduabuchi Nweke, confirmed the development, stating that over 200 youths participated in the search operation that led to the suspect’s capture. He added that Oforbuike has since been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue as the community continues to grapple with the emotional aftermath of the incident.
The case has sparked outrage and concern among residents, highlighting broader issues around mental health, family conflict, and community justice practices in rural areas.
