Nigeria Gets 4–1 Victory in World Cup Qualifiers Playoff

Posted on November 14, 2025November 14, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Nigeria Gets 4–1 Victory in World Cup Qualifiers Playoff

Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a commanding performance on Thursday night, securing a dominant 4–1 victory over Gabon in the World Cup qualifiers playoff to keep their hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive. The match, played at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, produced high drama, late goals, and an extra-time spectacle that left fans thrilled.

The encounter began with Nigeria showing clear intent, controlling possession and dictating the flow of the game. Despite several attacking forays from the wings and multiple attempts from Victor Osimhen and Moses Simon, Gabon’s defence held firm in the opening half, keeping the match goalless heading into the break.

Nigeria continued to mount pressure in the second half, probing the Gabonese backline with more consistency. Their breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute when Akor Adams capitalised on a defensive error, intercepting a misplaced back-pass and calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to put Nigeria ahead.

The lead, however, was short-lived. In the 89th minute, Gabon’s Mario Lemina struck a powerful effort from outside the box that took a deflection, beating the Nigerian goalkeeper and stunning the Super Eagles bench. With the match tied 1–1, the game headed into extra time, raising anxiety among Nigerian supporters.

Once extra time began, Nigeria shifted into a higher gear. Chidera Ejuke restored the Super Eagles’ lead in the 97th minute with a composed finish following a swift counterattack that caught the Gabon defence off guard. His goal reignited belief and momentum for the Nigerians.

Victor Osimhen, long known for his big-game temperament, took over the match from there. In the 102nd minute, he slotted home Nigeria’s third goal after a well-constructed team move, sending the fans in Rabat into wild celebration. The Napoli striker wasn’t done yet.

Osimhen returned in the 110th minute to score his second of the night — and Nigeria’s fourth — with a clinical strike that put the game completely out of Gabon’s reach. The brace extended his formidable scoring record for the national team and sealed Nigeria’s emphatic extra-time win.

The victory was particularly significant given the off-field distractions earlier in the week, including reports of a temporary training boycott over unpaid bonuses. Despite the controversy, the team showed unity and resilience, delivering a performance that reaffirmed their ambition to reach the global stage.

With the 4–1 triumph, Nigeria now advances to the playoff final, where they will face the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo. The winner of that clash will progress to the inter-continental playoff — the last hurdle before sealing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For the Super Eagles, this victory is more than just a result; it is a statement. It signals a return to confidence, a rekindling of belief among fans, and a reminder that Nigeria remains one of Africa’s strongest contenders in world football. The journey continues, and the dream of a World Cup appearance remains firmly alive.
