BREAKING NEWS: Nnamdi Kanu Bags Life Imprisonment Over Terrorism Charges

Posted on November 20, 2025November 20, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on BREAKING NEWS: Nnamdi Kanu Bags Life Imprisonment Over Terrorism Charges

In a historic and highly charged ruling delivered in Abuja, the Federal High Court has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on multiple terrorism-related charges. Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the long-running case, ruled that Kanu’s “sit-at-home” orders in the southeast constituted acts of terrorism under Nigeria’s Terrorism Prevention Act, leading to this definitive judgment.

The court held that Kanu issued illegal directives that crippled economic, educational, and civic activities across several southeastern states, causing widespread fear and disruption. Markets, banks, schools, and transport systems were repeatedly shut as residents complied out of fear of violent enforcement by armed groups linked to IPOB’s Eastern Security Network (ESN). Prosecution witnesses testified that these enforcers operated under Kanu’s influence.

Justice Omotosho stressed that only the President of the Federal Republic has constitutional authority to impose movement restrictions, ruling that Kanu had no lawful mandate to order citizens to remain indoors. He described the IPOB leader as someone who “turned himself into a tyrant,” insisting that his directives posed clear threats to national security and public safety.

The judgment was further influenced by Kanu’s refusal to present a defense throughout the trial. According to the court, his persistent absence from lawful defense allowed the bench to rely entirely on the prosecution’s submissions and documentary evidence, ultimately reinforcing the decision to convict and sentence him to the maximum permissible punishment.

Under Section 16 of the Terrorism Prevention Act (Amendment) 2013, individuals found guilty of terrorism offences face either death or life imprisonment. While the Federal Government’s counsel argued that death was the only lawful option, the court opted instead for life imprisonment, concluding that it was the appropriate penalty under the circumstances.

The case has reignited political tension nationwide. Prominent activist Omoyele Sowore had earlier claimed the Federal Government was working to ensure Kanu received either a death sentence or life imprisonment, describing the process as a high-level political conspiracy. His comments resurfaced following the ruling, fueling renewed debates over fairness and political influence in the trial.

Beyond the courtroom, reactions have been swift across the southeast, where Kanu commands significant influence. While some residents view the ruling as an attack on the self-determination movement, others argue it could mark a turning point for restoring stability after years of violent disruptions associated with the sit-at-home orders. Authorities are closely monitoring the region for possible unrest.

This verdict adds a dramatic chapter to a legal journey that began with Kanu’s first arrest in 2015, his flight from Nigeria after jumping bail in 2017, and his controversial re-arrest in Kenya in 2021. Over the years, the case has moved between multiple judges, endured political controversies, and drawn international attention due to its human rights and national security implications.

Kanu’s legal team is expected to file an appeal, arguing procedural irregularities and constitutional concerns. However, legal analysts note that terrorism convictions, especially those involving national security concerns are difficult to overturn, making the path ahead steep for the defense.

With the sentencing now official, the Federal Government says it hopes the judgment will serve as a deterrence against unlawful directives that threaten national unity. Meanwhile, supporters of the Biafran movement insist the struggle will continue, setting the stage for what may become a prolonged period of political tension even after the courtroom battle has ended.
