New Wave of Fear as Terrorists Strike Isanlu Makutu–Idofin Highway in Kogi State

Posted on November 30, 2025November 30, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on New Wave of Fear as Terrorists Strike Isanlu Makutu–Idofin Highway in Kogi State

Residents and travellers in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State were thrown into chaos on Saturday, 29 November 2025, after terrorists launched a sudden and violent attack along the Isanlu Makutu–Idofin highway. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, has renewed anxiety over the rising wave of insecurity across the state.

Eyewitnesses who narrowly escaped the scene said the gunmen emerged unexpectedly from the surrounding bushes and began shooting sporadically. The ambush forced motorists to abandon their vehicles, with many fleeing into nearby farmlands and forested areas to escape the hail of bullets.

The attack, described as swift and coordinated, left the usually busy highway deserted within minutes. Travellers who were en route to markets, social events, and inter-state destinations found themselves running for safety as the assailants took control of the road.

Residents of nearby communities reported hearing sustained gunfire, prompting fear that several travellers may have been abducted. Although the exact number of victims remains unclear, local sources say it is feared that multiple persons were taken into the bush during the assault.

This latest assault deepens concerns over the escalating pattern of violent attacks in Kogi State, which has witnessed repeated ambushes on highways and kidnappings in rural communities. Only days earlier, security operatives rescued 21 abducted passengers in another part of the state, though two members of the rescue team, a soldier and a vigilante lost their lives in the operation.

The Isanlu Makutu–Idofin corridor has become increasingly vulnerable in recent months, with residents complaining about inadequate patrol presence and the lack of early-warning systems to detect approaching attackers. Saturday’s incident has now amplified demands for increased security intervention.

Local leaders and community associations have begun calling on the state government and security agencies to deploy more personnel to the area. They argue that securing the highway is critical, as it serves as a major route for trade, schooling, religious activities, and inter-community movement.

Security agencies have reportedly been alerted and were said to be mobilising to the scene shortly after the attack. Early efforts are expected to involve crime-scene assessment, vehicle recovery, and a coordinated search-and-rescue mission to track down the attackers and retrieve abducted victims.

The attack has also reignited discussions around the growing boldness of armed groups in central Nigeria. Many residents worry that without urgent counter-measures—especially intelligence-driven operations and consistent road patrols—criminal elements will continue to exploit soft targets such as rural highways.

As the community awaits official updates, one thing remains clear: Saturday’s attack has once again exposed the fragile state of security along major routes in Kogi. For residents of Yagba East and beyond, the fear is not just about who was taken, but when the next attack might occur.
