The Nigerian Army has approved a sweeping promotion of its senior officers, elevating a total of 105 personnel to higher ranks in a major leadership reshuffle. On Friday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele (Lt-Col), announced that the promotions were ratified by the Army Council during its meeting on Thursday, 27 November 2025.
Under the new promotions, 28 officers holding the rank of Brigadier General have been elevated to the rank of Major General, while 77 Colonels have been promoted to Brigadier General. The move reflects a broad reshuffle across multiple commands and units within the Army, underlining efforts to reinforce leadership at senior levels.

Among those promoted to Major General are officers serving in critical intelligence and defence information roles, signalling the Army’s emphasis on strengthening command in sensitive departments. The list includes, for example, officers from the Defence Intelligence Agency, senior staff in defence information, as well as those heading key operational and training institutions.
Also elevated are officers from other major formations: logistics divisions, procurement, signals and engineering. The promotion even includes a posthumous elevation — with one officer honoured with the rank of Major General after his passing.
The 77 Colonels promoted to Brigadier General span a wide range of army corps and departments — from headquarters administrative units, finance corps, and civil-military affairs, to training institutions, armour schools, special forces brigades, and medical services. This cross-section shows the army’s intention to deepen leadership capacity across every part of its structure, not just in frontline combat or intelligence units.
In remarks following the promotion announcement, the Waidi Shaibu — Chief of Army Staff (COAS) — congratulated the newly elevated officers and their families. He urged them to intensify their professional commitment, justify the confidence reposed in them, and demonstrate leadership befitting their new ranks.
Shaibu emphasized that the promoted officers must uphold their oath of allegiance to defend the territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and maintain unwavering loyalty to the Constitution. He further called on them to exhibit exemplary behaviour, inspire subordinates, and employ bold, innovative strategies to address evolving national security challenges.
Observers note that this promotion exercise — involving officers across intelligence, logistics, training, operations, procurement, and support services — signals a holistic effort by the Nigerian Army to strengthen its leadership capacity at all levels, not just in combat units. The breadth of promotions suggests a readiness to tackle complex security issues with renewed structure and governance.
As Nigeria continues to face diverse security challenges, from insurgency and regional instability to internal threats, the updated leadership roster may play a critical role in shaping the Army’s strategic responses in the coming months.
