Adeleke resigns from PDP amid national leadership crisis

Posted on December 2, 2025December 2, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Adeleke resigns from PDP amid national leadership crisis

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, has officially resigned his membership of the party, a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Osun and beyond.

The resignation was conveyed in a letter dated November 4, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North Local Government Area of Osun. The disclosure was made public on December 2, 2025, through a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

In the formal letter titled “Resignation of my membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP),” Adeleke cited the “current crisis within the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party” as the primary reason for his departure, adding that his resignation takes effect immediately.

In expressing his gratitude, Adeleke thanked the PDP for the opportunities it provided him, first as Senator representing Osun West, and later as Governor of Osun State.

The timing of the resignation is particularly significant: it comes barely a day before a highly anticipated governorship primary election scheduled by the PDP for December 2, 2025. Reports indicate that the state chapter of the PDP had already hinted that Adeleke might no longer be interested in seeking the party’s ticket for the 2026 governorship election, given the unresolved internal crisis at the national level.

The leadership strife at the national headquarters of the PDP reportedly involves a protracted tussle over control, suspensions and counter-suspensions of key officers, which disrupted the statutory congresses required for delegate elections ahead of primaries. This institutional paralysis severely undermined the ability of state chapters to conduct credible primaries and transmit candidate names to the electoral body.

By quitting the PDP, Adeleke joins an expanding list of governors who have left the party in 2025, a sign of growing instability in the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As of now, Adeleke has not publicly declared which political platform he intends to join next after leaving the PDP. The uncertainty has stirred speculation among political observers about possible realignments and the impact this exit could have on the upcoming 2026 Osun governorship election.

The resignation marks a dramatic turn of events, especially after months of public assurances from Adeleke earlier in 2025 that he had no intention of leaving the PDP, even dismissing rumors of defection as “fake news.” At the time, stakeholders within the party had reaffirmed confidence in his leadership and re-endorsed him as the likely PDP candidate for the next governorship contest.

With Adeleke’s departure, attention now turns to what comes next: whether the PDP can stabilize and whether Adeleke will adopt a new political home in time to shape the electoral contest for Osun’s future.
