President Bola Tinubu Nominates General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the New Minister of Defence

Posted on December 2, 2025December 2, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on President Bola Tinubu Nominates General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the New Minister of Defence

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially nominated former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. The nomination, transmitted to the Senate earlier today, marks a major development in the nation’s security leadership following the sudden resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on health grounds.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu sought the upper chamber’s approval for the appointment, in line with constitutional requirements. The announcement was further confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who described Musa’s nomination as part of the administration’s effort to strengthen national security architecture.

General Musa, born in 1967 in Sokoto, has had a distinguished military career spanning over three decades. A graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy, he rose through the ranks after his commissioning in 1991, taking up several operational, instructional, and command responsibilities within the Nigerian Army. His trajectory reflects a combination of field experience, leadership exposure, and strategic-level military training.

Before his retirement in October 2025, Musa served as the 18th Chief of Defence Staff, a position he assumed in June 2023 following President Tinubu’s initial military reshuffle. During his tenure, he coordinated joint service operations and spearheaded strategic reforms within the Armed Forces, particularly in the Northeast and Lake Chad Basin where insurgency remains a persistent security threat.

Musa is widely known for his role as Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the military’s flagship counter-insurgency campaign. He oversaw critical operations that led to the degradation of several terrorist strongholds and the surrender of hundreds of insurgents. His leadership in that theatre earned him commendations and strengthened his reputation as a battle-tested commander.

The nomination also comes at a time when insecurity in the North and other regions continues to challenge the nation. Nigeria has witnessed heightened bandit attacks, kidnapping incidents, and communal violence in recent months. Analysts believe Musa’s robust counter-insurgency background could signal a renewed, more coordinated approach to tackling the country’s complex security landscape.

Sources within the Presidency revealed that General Musa met privately with President Tinubu at the Aso Villa shortly before the resignation of the outgoing Defence Minister. The closed-door meeting heightened speculation, which has now been confirmed through the official nomination transmitted to the Senate.

If confirmed, General Musa will assume leadership of the Defence Ministry at a critical time, with expectations of driving reforms across the military, improving inter-agency synergy, and restoring public confidence in the nation’s security institutions. His reputation as a disciplined officer and strategic thinker is expected to play a crucial role in his new assignment.

Security observers and civil society groups have reacted positively to the development, noting that Musa’s operational experience, particularly in high-risk zones, positions him as a competent candidate to oversee defence administration. Many also view his nomination as a deliberate move by the Tinubu administration to inject experienced military leadership into the civilian-controlled Ministry of Defence.

The nation now awaits Senate screening and confirmation, which will determine General Musa’s formal assumption of duties. As Nigeria navigates one of its most challenging security periods in recent years, all eyes remain on the legislative process and the renewed hope that strengthened defence leadership could chart a new path toward stability and national safety.
