EFCC to Charge Ex-Minister Chris Ngige in Court After High-Profile Arrest in Abuja

Posted on December 11, 2025December 11, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on EFCC to Charge Ex-Minister Chris Ngige in Court After High-Profile Arrest in Abuja

In a high-profile development that has gripped political and legal circles across Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign Dr. Chris Ngige, former Minister of Labour and Productivity and ex-Governor of Anambra State, in court following his arrest in Abuja this week.

Dr. Ngige was taken into EFCC custody late Wednesday at his residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road in Asokoro, Abuja, in an operation described by family members as a “commando-style raid.” Around 20 operatives from the EFCC’s Wuse II Zonal Office allegedly carried out the arrest, and sources say he was not permitted to change clothes, being taken away still in his pyjamas.

Unverified reports of a possible kidnapping quickly spread on social media following the sudden action, but Ngige’s media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, immediately dispelled the rumours. Chukwuelobe confirmed that the former governor was in the custody of the EFCC and not abducted, clarifying that Ngige was cooperating with authorities prior to his arrest.

The circumstances surrounding the EFCC’s decision to detain Ngige are still unfolding. Before the arrest, Ngige had been on administrative bail with the anti-graft agency after being invited for questioning over undisclosed matters. Sources indicate he remained in contact with the EFCC and had been complying with requests from investigators.

Reports also suggest that Ngige had planned a medical trip to the United States but was forced to abort the journey after losing his passport while transiting through the United Kingdom. He subsequently obtained temporary travel documents from the Nigerian High Commission in the UK and returned to Abuja, where he had prepared a letter to inform the EFCC about the lost passport, though it was reportedly not submitted before the EFCC operatives arrived.

While the EFCC has not publicly disclosed the exact nature of the charges, sources familiar with the matter tell journalists that Ngige is expected to be formally charged in court possibly as soon as today where his legal team will likely argue for bail.

The arrest has also stirred reactions among Ngige’s supporters and kinsmen in his home state of Anambra. Some have expressed confusion and concern, especially given that the arrest occurred while he was reportedly recovering from an earlier attack on his convoy in the state.

As one of Nigeria’s prominent political figures, having served as Anambra State governor from 2003 to 2006 and as a key minister in the federal cabinet, Ngige’s legal troubles mark a significant moment in ongoing efforts by anti-graft agencies to pursue high-level corruption cases. Analysts say the outcome of his arraignment will be closely watched as an indicator of the government’s resolve to prosecute alleged corruption even at the highest tiers of public service.

The EFCC has so far declined immediate comment on the matter, and the details of the impending charges remain officially undisclosed as of this writing. Journalists and legal observers are awaiting further statements from the Commission and updates from Ngige’s legal representatives ahead of the scheduled court appearance.
