AHF Sounds Alarm as 4,000 Young Women Aged 15–24 Contract HIV Weekly

Posted on October 9, 2025October 9, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on AHF Sounds Alarm as 4,000 Young Women Aged 15–24 Contract HIV Weekly

…Over 3,300 of New Weekly Infections Occur in Sub-Saharan Africa, AHF Nigeria Calls for Urgent Action

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has raised an urgent alarm over the rising number of young women contracting HIV globally, revealing that about 4,000 adolescent girls and young women aged between 15 and 24 become newly infected with the virus every week. According to the foundation, over 3,300 of these weekly infections occur in sub-Saharan Africa, a region that continues to bear the greatest burden of the global HIV epidemic. The revelation comes as the world prepares to mark the 2025 International Day of the Girl, highlighting a worrying trend that threatens the health and future of millions of young women.

AHF Nigeria’s Senior Advocacy and Marketing Manager, Steve Aborishade, said the statistics reflect deep social, economic, and gender inequalities that make young women especially vulnerable to HIV. He emphasized that adolescent girls and young women continue to carry a disproportionate burden of new infections compared to their male counterparts, largely due to limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Aborishade noted that while global progress has been made in expanding HIV prevention and treatment, too many young women are still being left behind.

Recent global data show that about 1.9 million girls and young women were living with HIV in 2023, compared to roughly 1.2 million boys and young men within the same age group. The disparity, AHF explained, is rooted in gender-based violence, early marriage, sexual abuse, and lack of access to sexual and reproductive health services. Many girls also face social barriers that prevent them from seeking care or negotiating safe sexual practices, leaving them vulnerable to infection.

Education has also been identified as a key factor. According to AHF, there are over 133 million girls worldwide who are out of school, and this exclusion often translates to increased exposure to health risks, including HIV. Girls who are not in school are less likely to receive comprehensive sexuality education or access information about their reproductive rights and protection. The organization stressed that education is one of the strongest protective factors against HIV and must be prioritized as a tool for prevention and empowerment.

In Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa, cultural and economic challenges further complicate the fight against HIV among young women. Poverty and lack of employment often push young women into transactional or survival sex, increasing their risk of exposure. In many cases, unequal power dynamics in relationships make it difficult for girls to insist on condom use or refuse unsafe sex. AHF said these realities must be confronted with bold policy reforms and sustained public education.

As part of its advocacy activities, AHF Nigeria announced plans to commemorate this year’s International Day of the Girl on October 10, 2025, with an empowerment event at the Community Commercial Secondary School in Ikot Oku Ubo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The event will feature educational sessions on menstrual hygiene, leadership, and comprehensive sexual education, alongside free sanitary pad distribution. The foundation explained that these initiatives aim to build confidence, improve health awareness, and equip girls with knowledge that can help them make informed life choices.

The AHF also plans to use the occasion to call on government agencies, donor organizations, and civil society to strengthen efforts in tackling the HIV epidemic among young women. The foundation urged policymakers to increase funding for HIV prevention, testing, and treatment programs, particularly those targeting adolescent girls and young women. It also called for policies that eliminate barriers to healthcare access and ensure every girl can live free from violence, stigma, and discrimination.

AHF emphasized that effective response requires collaboration across all levels of society. Families, schools, religious institutions, and local communities all have roles to play in changing harmful attitudes and promoting gender equity. The foundation pointed out that many girls are trapped in cycles of poverty and dependence because of societal norms that limit their opportunities and silence their voices. Changing these realities, it said, is essential to curbing the epidemic.

Experts have warned that failure to address these gender disparities could undermine global targets to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. They argue that the future of the HIV response lies in early intervention reaching girls in their teenage years with information, services, and empowerment before they become exposed to infection. Without this, new infections among young women may continue to rise, even as other demographic groups record declines.

In addition to prevention, AHF Nigeria is advocating greater investment in testing and treatment programs that are youth-friendly and accessible. The foundation said adolescent-friendly health services should be scaled up across communities, ensuring confidentiality and respect for young people seeking care. It added that prevention tools such as condoms and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) should be made widely available and affordable for sexually active youth.

The foundation also called for tougher laws and stronger enforcement against gender-based violence, early marriage, and child exploitation — all of which increase young women’s risk of contracting HIV. It urged community leaders and influencers to champion awareness campaigns that promote equality and support survivors of abuse. According to AHF, a society that protects its girls protects its future, and the ongoing infection trend should be treated as both a public health and social justice emergency.

As the world marks the 2025 International Day of the Girl, the message from AHF Nigeria is clear: urgent action is needed to save a generation of young women from preventable infections. The foundation insists that empowerment through education, access to health services, and gender equality are not just moral imperatives but strategic tools for ending the HIV epidemic. Unless these measures are implemented with urgency, thousands of young women will continue to be infected every week, a human tragedy that the world can no longer afford to ignore.
