Lionel Messi today spearheaded Argentina’s much needed 2-1 victory to book a ticket in the World Cup quarterfinals.
Today’s world cup encounter is Messi’s 1,000th career match, and he scored the opening goal with an outstanding effort.
Julian Alvarez took the baton from Messi and scored in the second half to set up a quarterfinal tie against the Netherlands thereby knocking Australia out of the mundial.
Despite Argentina’s firepower, Australia managed to limit the goal hauls with neither side exerting any dominance.
Despite their desire, a comeback didn’t materialise for Australia and their Qatar 2022 World Cup run ended.
