INEC Presses Ahead With 2027 Election Timetable as NASS Stalls Electoral Act Amendment

Posted on February 4, 2026February 4, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on INEC Presses Ahead With 2027 Election Timetable as NASS Stalls Electoral Act Amendment

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved ahead with preparations for the 2027 General Elections, finalising its internal election timetable despite delays by the National Assembly in passing amendments to the Electoral Act. The development underscores INEC’s determination to stay within constitutionally mandated timelines, even as electoral reforms remain uncertain.

INEC officials disclosed that the commission has completed technical and operational planning for the 2027 polls, including a draft timetable and schedule of activities. However, the commission has clarified that the timetable has not yet been formally published, as it must comply strictly with the prevailing legal framework governing elections in Nigeria.

The delay at the National Assembly centres on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which is expected to introduce further reforms to Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of 2027. While the House of Representatives has made progress on the proposed amendments, the Senate is yet to conclude legislative action, leaving the bill pending.

INEC has repeatedly stated that it cannot implement provisions that are not backed by law. Until the amendment bill is passed and signed into law by the President, the commission remains bound by the Electoral Act 2022 in planning and conducting elections nationwide.

Despite this uncertainty, INEC insists that it cannot afford to wait indefinitely for legislative action, citing constitutional deadlines that guide election preparation. Under existing law, the commission is required to issue a Notice of Election at least 360 days before the date of the general election, a timeline that makes early planning unavoidable.

The situation has sparked concern among civil society organisations, election observers and political stakeholders, many of whom warn that prolonged delays could limit the scope of reforms available for the 2027 polls. They argue that late changes to electoral laws could also create confusion for political parties, candidates and voters.

Some of the proposed amendments are considered critical to strengthening electoral integrity, including provisions relating to party primaries, election technology, and penalties for electoral offences. Advocates of reform believe early passage of the bill would give INEC ample time to operationalise new measures effectively.

Lawmakers, however, have defended the slow pace of the process, insisting that thorough legislative scrutiny is necessary to avoid loopholes and legal disputes. They maintain that the amendment process is ongoing and will be concluded in the national interest.

INEC has also cautioned Nigerians against circulating or relying on unofficial election timetables, stressing that only documents formally released by the commission should be regarded as authentic. The electoral body says any official timetable will be published in line with the law and widely communicated.

As the countdown to 2027 continues, attention remains firmly on the National Assembly to complete work on the Electoral Act amendments. Until then, INEC’s preparations signal that Nigeria’s electoral umpire is determined to keep the democratic process on track, with or without last-minute legislative changes.
