The Israeli military has confirmed the capture of a senior operative of the Islamist group Jamaa Islamiya during a targeted cross-border operation in southern Lebanon, marking a significant development in the ongoing security tensions along Israel’s northern frontier.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the operation was carried out overnight by troops operating under the 210th Bashan Regional Division, following precise intelligence indicating the presence of a high-ranking member of the Sunni Islamist group in the border area.
The suspect was apprehended alive during the raid, with Israeli forces recovering weapons and other military items from the location. The IDF said the operative was subsequently transferred into Israeli custody for further interrogation by security agencies.
Israeli officials described the arrest as a “high-value capture,” noting that the suspect is believed to possess critical intelligence regarding Jamaa Islamiya’s operational structure, leadership hierarchy, and links with other armed groups active in southern Lebanon.
Jamaa Islamiya, a Sunni Islamist organization aligned ideologically with the Muslim Brotherhood, has maintained an armed wing in Lebanon and has, in recent years, been accused by Israel of involvement in hostile activities along the border, including rocket attacks and support roles for allied militant factions.
Following the announcement of the arrest, Jamaa Islamiya released a statement confirming the identity of the detained operative and warned that it holds Israel responsible for his safety while in custody, a response that has further heightened tensions in the region.
The capture comes amid sustained volatility along the Israel–Lebanon border, where exchanges of fire, surveillance operations, and targeted military actions have increased since the escalation of regional conflicts involving Gaza and southern Lebanon.
Israeli military sources emphasized that the decision to capture the suspect rather than eliminate him was driven by intelligence considerations, as information obtained from senior operatives is often crucial in disrupting planned attacks and dismantling militant networks.
Security analysts say the operation underscores Israel’s strategy of proactive intelligence-led raids aimed at neutralizing threats before they materialize, particularly from groups operating outside direct state control in neighboring territories.
As investigations continue, the arrest is expected to draw regional and international attention, especially regarding its potential impact on Israel-Lebanon relations and the broader security dynamics involving non-state armed groups in the Middle East.
