President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, bringing an early end to his tenure as the nation’s top police officer. The development was confirmed in an official statement from the Presidency, marking a significant leadership change within the country’s security architecture.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been expected to serve a statutory four-year term. His resignation, according to the Presidency, followed the submission of a formal letter citing pressing family considerations. The announcement immediately set the stage for a transition in the leadership of the national police institution.
Following the acceptance of the resignation, the President named Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police. Disu, a senior officer with extensive operational and administrative experience, steps into the role at a time when the country continues to grapple with diverse internal security concerns.
In the official communication, the President commended the outgoing police chief for his years of dedicated service to the nation and his efforts toward strengthening policing structures. The administration acknowledged his contributions to ongoing reforms and operational strategies within the force.
The new acting police chief is expected to immediately assume command of the Nigeria Police Force, overseeing nationwide operations and coordination with other security agencies. His appointment takes effect pending further constitutional procedures required to confirm him in a substantive capacity.
Under the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the appointment of a substantive Inspector-General of Police requires consultation with the Nigeria Police Council. The Council is mandated to consider and recommend the candidate before the nomination proceeds to the legislative stage.
After the Council’s consideration, the nominee’s name is expected to be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional requirements. Until that process is concluded, Disu will serve in an acting capacity.
The leadership change comes at a period of sustained national focus on security reform, crime prevention, and public safety. Observers note that stability within the police hierarchy is critical to maintaining in in ongoing security operations across various regions of the country.
Disu’s professional background includes key command and investigative roles, earning him recognition within policing circles. His experience is expected to shape the direction of operational priorities as he takes over the helm of the force.
With the transition now underway, attention will turn to how the new acting police chief navigates the demands of the office and whether his appointment will be confirmed substantively after due process. For now, the change marks a fresh chapter in the leadership of Nigeria’s policing system.
