The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that a motorcyclist was shot by police officers during an incident at Oyun Bridge in Ilorin.
The Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, said the viral video being shared online does not accurately represent what happened during the encounter.
According to the police, the incident occurred while officers were carrying out routine patrol and stop-and-search operations around Oyun Bridge. The Command said a 23-year-old motorcyclist identified as Abdurasaq Lukman allegedly approached the area at high speed and knocked down a police officer, Corporal Saka Azeez.
The collision reportedly left Corporal Azeez with serious head injuries and a fracture. The motorcyclist also sustained minor injuries during the incident.
The police said officers at the scene immediately intervened and took both the injured officer and the motorcyclist to a medical facility for treatment. This, according to the Command, was part of the immediate response to the incident.
Lukman was subsequently treated and discharged from the hospital. He is currently in police custody while investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Corporal Azeez, however, remains under medical care. The Command said the officer requires additional medical examinations and scans to determine the full extent of the head injury he sustained.
The police specifically denied the claim that Lukman was shot by officers, stressing that no person was shot during the incident. The clarification comes amid growing public attention to the video circulating across social media platforms.
The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Ojo Adekimi, psc, mnips, urged members of the public to exercise caution before sharing information about incidents involving security personnel.
The Command acknowledged the public’s legitimate interest in police operations but urged residents to verify claims before circulating them, noting that unverified reports can create unnecessary fear, tension and misunderstanding.
The statement was signed by SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, ANIPR, Police Public Relations Officer for the Kwara State Command, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
