The Nigeria Police Force has officially begun enforcing stricter regulations on vehicle tinted glass and the unauthorized use of sirens across the country, starting October 2, 2025.
This move is rooted in the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, which restricts how dark window tints can be and requires vehicles with tinted glass to hold valid permits.
What the Enforcement Covers
Every vehicle with tinted windows, whether factory-fitted or aftermarket must now present a tinted glass permit if asked by the police.
The crackdown also targets unauthorized use of sirens, revolving lights, unassigned official number plates, and unregistered vehicles.
Motorists who fail to obtain or renew the permit risk having their vehicles impounded and may face prosecution.
Earlier in 2025, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered motorists to apply for tinted glass permits at N14,200 per year via the police’s official portal.

A grace period extension was given, but the deadline expired, prompting full enforcement to begin.
However, not everyone is happy. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has filed a lawsuit to challenge the tinted glass permit policy, arguing it violates citizens’ rights and questioning the constitutional basis of the 2004 Act.
Even so, the police maintain that no court order currently halts enforcement.
The police urged citizens to comply and carry valid vehicle documents.
Some vehicle owners have raised concerns about accessibility to the registration portal, citing issues with logging in or loading the website.
What Motorists Should Know
Get or renew your Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) early via the official police portal.
Carry proof of permit when driving, since checks may occur anytime.
Remove tints or revert to clear glass if you’re unwilling or unable to acquire a permit legally.
Be alert: officers have been warned against harassment or extortion. Any misconduct should be reported.
