Police Explain ₦100m Transfer to IGP’s Son as Banking Error, Say Funds Were Immediately Returned

Posted on February 25, 2026February 25, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Police Explain ₦100m Transfer to IGP’s Son as Banking Error, Say Funds Were Immediately Returned

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed allegations of financial impropriety following reports that ₦100 million was paid into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun. The police authorities described the transaction as a banking error that was promptly detected and reversed without delay.

Public attention was drawn to the issue after online reports alleged that the ₦100 million originated from the security vote account of the Anambra State Government and was traced to a private account belonging to Victor Egbetokun. The development sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians demanding clarification over the source and purpose of the funds.

In an official response, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the transfer was neither solicited nor expected. He stated that the credit alert was noticed by Victor, who immediately flagged it as suspicious and took steps to have the funds returned to the originating account.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s political programme Politics Today, Hundeyin clarified that the transaction was reversed shortly after it was discovered. According to him, there was no attempt to conceal the payment, and documentation exists to confirm that the entire amount was refunded intact.

The police further disclosed that Victor printed out his bank statement to demonstrate that the money was returned. Authorities also confirmed that the account involved in the transaction has since been closed as a precautionary measure to prevent any recurrence or further controversy.

Addressing concerns about transparency, the police emphasized that the matter stemmed from an internal banking error rather than any deliberate diversion of public funds. They maintained that neither the Inspector-General nor his son had any prior knowledge of or involvement in the transfer before it occurred.

To ensure accountability and clear any lingering suspicion, Victor is reported to have submitted a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, requesting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the erroneous payment. The move, according to police sources, was intended to allow an independent review of the situation.

The clarification comes at a time of heightened public scrutiny over the management of security votes and government finances. Issues surrounding transparency in public office continue to generate debate nationwide, making the swift explanation by the police particularly significant.

Observers note that while the police have provided assurances that the funds were immediately returned, the incident underscores the sensitivity of financial transactions involving public officials and their families. In such matters, perception often carries as much weight as fact, reinforcing the need for prompt communication.

For now, the Nigeria Police Force insists the episode was a simple banking mistake that was corrected without loss to public funds. Authorities say they remain committed to transparency and accountability, adding that any findings from further review by relevant agencies will be made known to the public.
