Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has firmly dismissed calls for the removal of its chairman, describing such demands as unfounded and rooted in misinformation.
In a statement addressing growing public discourse, INEC emphasized that its current leadership under Prof Joash Amupitan remains constitutionally grounded and focused on strengthening the country’s democratic processes. The Commission cautioned against the spread of inaccurate narratives capable of eroding public trust in electoral institutions.
Notably, INEC also used the opportunity to clarify widespread misconceptions surrounding its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise. According to the Commission, the initiative is not a fresh voter registration drive but a targeted administrative process designed to update and verify existing voter records. This includes addressing issues such as data inconsistencies, relocation of voters, and the replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
INEC explained that the revalidation exercise is part of broader electoral reforms aimed at improving the integrity, accuracy, and credibility of the national voter register ahead of future elections. Officials stressed that the process would be conducted transparently and in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The Commission further reassured Nigerians that no eligible voter would be disenfranchised, urging citizens to rely on official communication channels for accurate information. It also warned against politicizing routine administrative processes, noting that such actions risk undermining public confidence in democratic governance.
