Suspected terrorists have launched a deadly attack on Nuku community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing five forest guards, including their commander, in a fresh wave of violence in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, saw heavily armed assailants storm the rural settlement, targeting operatives of the National Forest Guard stationed in the area. According to multiple reports, the victims were killed while attempting to repel the attack, highlighting the growing risks faced by local security formations.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the terrorists also destroyed properties during the raid, setting ablaze motorcycles belonging to the forest guards and torching patrol vehicles used by security agencies. Some buildings within the community were equally burnt, leaving residents in panic and forcing many to flee for safety.
Residents described scenes of chaos as gunfire echoed through the village, with villagers scrambling to escape the attack. The incident reportedly threw the entire community into confusion, underscoring persistent insecurity in border communities around Kwara’s forest regions.
The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the attack, stating that tactical and intelligence-led operations have been launched to track down the perpetrators and restore calm to the area.
Reacting to the development, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expressed deep sorrow over the killings, describing the fallen guards as brave patriots who paid the ultimate price in defense of their community. He noted that the guards resisted the terrorists and reportedly neutralised several of them during the confrontation.
The governor also reiterated the need for strengthened security strategies, urging military authorities to intensify operations against armed groups threatening rural communities.
This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of violent attacks in Kwara State, particularly in forested and border areas, where armed groups have increasingly exploited difficult terrain to launch assaults on vulnerable communities.
