Senate Summons DStv Over Controversial Billing System

Posted on May 7, 2026May 7, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Senate Summons DStv Over Controversial Billing System

The Nigerian Senate has summoned officials of MultiChoice Nigeria, operators of DStv, over growing complaints surrounding the company’s subscription billing model and persistent calls for a pay-as-you-go system.

The issue came up during plenary on Wednesday after lawmakers questioned why Nigerian subscribers continue to pay full monthly subscriptions even when they are unable to use the service for extended periods.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed concern over the current billing structure, arguing that the system appears unfair to many Nigerians already grappling with economic hardship.

Akpabio reportedly queried why subscribers who travel or temporarily suspend television viewing still lose their subscriptions despite not consuming the service during that period. He noted that unlike electricity and telecommunications services that operate largely on consumption-based models, DStv customers are billed on fixed packages irrespective of usage.

The Senate consequently directed the appropriate committee to invite MultiChoice Nigeria to appear before lawmakers and explain its pricing regime, frequent subscription increases, and resistance to adopting a pay-per-view or pay-as-you-go model being demanded by many consumers.

The development has revived a long-running national debate over the operations of pay-TV providers in Nigeria, especially amid repeated tariff hikes and worsening economic pressures on households.

Some lawmakers reportedly argued that Nigerians deserve more flexible subscription options similar to what obtains in other sectors, insisting that consumers should only pay for services actually utilized.

The Senate’s move has already sparked widespread reactions among subscribers, many of whom have for years complained about losing active subscriptions whenever they are unable to renew promptly or travel out of their homes.

As of the time of filing this report, MultiChoice Nigeria had not officially responded to the Senate’s summons.
