Kidnapped Before Dawn, Two Arrested: Oyo Police Close In on Suspects as Search for 38-Year-Old Victim Continues

Posted on September 28, 2026September 28, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Kidnapped Before Dawn, Two Arrested: Oyo Police Close In on Suspects as Search for 38-Year-Old Victim Continues

The quiet of the early morning in Layeri Village, near Ikoyi-Ile in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, was shattered on September 24 when armed men reportedly invaded a family compound and abducted 38-year-old Nathaniel Peter. The incident, which occurred at about 4:20 a.m., has since triggered a police investigation and a wider security operation aimed at bringing the victim home safely.

According to the Oyo State Police Command, three armed men forced their way into Peter’s room and took him away from the premises. The attackers reportedly escaped through the National Reserve Forest, allegedly taking with them a Hajue motorcycle and the victim’s mobile phone. The circumstances paint a familiar and deeply unsettling picture of how criminal groups can exploit the vulnerability of rural communities during the hours when most residents are asleep.

The matter was brought to police attention later that day at about 5:50 p.m., when a resident reported the invasion. Police operatives subsequently visited the scene and commenced preliminary assessment and investigation. The time gap between the reported abduction and the formal report is now part of a wider sequence investigators must examine as they attempt to reconstruct what happened and establish the movements of the abductors.

The investigation has already produced two arrests. Police identified the suspects as Muhammadu Abubakar, described as an adult, and Jayun Danali, a 17-year-old male. The command said both suspects were assisting investigators with information relevant to the case, while stressing that their arrests had generated leads that could help identify other people allegedly connected with the abduction.

The involvement of a 17-year-old in the investigation adds another troubling dimension to the case. However, the police description of Danali as a suspect does not by itself establish guilt, and the investigation remains ongoing. What the arrests demonstrate at this stage is that investigators believe the two men may possess information capable of helping them understand the wider network behind the reported abduction.

More importantly, the arrests have not ended the immediate crisis because Peter remains the central concern. The police said they were working with other security agencies to intensify coordinated operations directed at securing his safe rescue and apprehending other suspected members of the group who remain at large. In a kidnapping case, an arrest is significant, but the protection and recovery of the victim remain an urgent priority.

The location of the incident also deserves attention. Layeri Village is situated around Ikoyi-Ile, an area where the presence of forested terrain has featured in previous security incidents. In August, for example, police and other security personnel rescued a 17-year-old kidnapping victim near the Government Reserve Forest around Ikoyi-Ile after a coordinated search operation involving the police, Amotekun personnel, local vigilantes and hunters.

That earlier rescue and the latest abduction illustrate why forest corridors can present a difficult challenge for security agencies. Once abductors gain access to expansive bush or forest areas, tracking them can become considerably more complicated. The police have therefore emphasised intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation and credible information from residents as important components of the continuing operation.

For communities affected by kidnapping, however, security statements are ultimately measured against a much more personal reality. Behind every police case number is a family waiting for a loved one, neighbours living with uncertainty and a community wondering whether an ordinary night can suddenly become a life-changing ordeal. The case involving Peter therefore extends beyond the arrest of two suspects; it raises continuing questions about community vigilance, rapid reporting, intelligence sharing and the security of settlements located close to difficult terrain.

For now, the investigation remains active. The Oyo State Police Command has appealed to residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist the authorities. As investigators follow the leads generated by the arrests of Abubakar and Danali, the immediate expectation remains clear: that the search for Nathaniel Peter will lead not merely to more arrests, but to his safe return and a fuller account of what happened in Layeri Village before dawn on September 24.
