Arsenal’s flawless start to the 2026/27 Premier League season came crashing down in spectacular fashion on Saturday as Brighton & Hove Albion produced a commanding 3-0 victory over the reigning champions at the Amex Stadium. The defeat ended Arsenal’s perfect four-game league run and handed Mikel Arteta’s side their heaviest loss in more than three years.
The Gunners arrived on the south coast carrying a remarkable seven-match winning streak in all competitions, including victories in their opening four Premier League fixtures. With momentum firmly behind them, Arsenal were chasing an eighth consecutive victory to open the campaign, but Brighton had other plans.
Brighton made their intentions clear from the opening whistle, pressing Arsenal aggressively and forcing mistakes that had been largely absent from the champions’ impressive opening weeks. The hosts repeatedly disrupted Arsenal’s build-up and created an uncomfortable afternoon for Arteta’s men.
The breakthrough arrived after 31 minutes when Pascal Gross found room on the edge of Arsenal’s penalty area before firing a low effort that went in off the upright. David Raya was beaten by the precise strike as Brighton deservedly took the lead.
Arsenal attempted to respond, with Bukayo Saka and Bruno Guimarães among those involved in efforts to restore parity. But Brighton maintained their intensity and continued to expose gaps in the visitors’ defensive structure. The hosts were rewarded again just before the interval.
Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage on the stroke of half-time, leaving Arsenal with a mountain to climb. The teenager’s finish capped a first-half display in which Brighton repeatedly unsettled the Premier League champions.
Whatever Arteta said during the interval could not immediately change the direction of the contest. Brighton continued to dictate the intensity after the restart and struck again in the 57th minute, with Chema Andrés rising to head home from a corner and make it 3-0.
Arsenal did enjoy periods of possession, eventually finishing with 60 per cent of the ball, but possession did not translate into sufficient attacking threat. Brighton registered five shots on target compared with Arsenal’s two, while the hosts remained dangerous throughout the encounter.
The result also marked a remarkable anniversary celebration for Brighton, who were wearing a special blue kit commemorating the club’s 125th anniversary. Fabian Hürzeler’s side moved to third in the Premier League table with 10 points from five matches and have now scored a league-leading 16 goals.
For Arsenal, the setback leaves the champions on 12 points from five matches, level with Manchester City at the time of the result. Arteta acknowledged afterward that Brighton deserved the victory and described his team’s performance as technically poor, calling the defeat a major lesson. The champions now have a response to make after a sobering afternoon that demonstrated just how unforgiving the Premier League can be.
