Chelsea Football Club has confirmed a major change to its ownership structure, with affiliates of US investment firm Clearlake Capital Group acquiring the ownership interests held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter and consequently taking full control of the Premier League club.
The development brings an end to the ownership arrangement established in 2022, when Clearlake joined Boehly, Walter and Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss to acquire Chelsea from Roman Abramovich. Clearlake had previously been the club’s majority owner, holding about 61.5 per cent.
Under the newly announced arrangement, Clearlake will acquire both Boehly’s and Walter’s interests. Wyss, however, will remain an important stakeholder and partner within the ownership group, according to Chelsea’s official announcement.
Boehly’s departure also marks the end of his tenure as chairman of Chelsea. The American businessman became the public face of the ownership consortium after the 2022 takeover and was closely involved in the club’s activities during the subsequent four-year period.
In a statement following the transition, Boehly described his time as Chelsea chairman as an honour and thanked the club’s supporters, players, coaches, staff and other stakeholders. He also said he was confident in the club’s future under Clearlake’s leadership.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano also acknowledged Boehly’s contribution to the club. They said Clearlake intends to continue the strategic direction developed during the group’s joint ownership while maintaining its focus on the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development.
The ownership transition follows significant investment in Chelsea since the 2022 takeover. According to the club, resources have been committed to the men’s, women’s and youth teams, the Cobham training facilities, medical and player-support services, academy development, and sporting and business operations.
Reports from Reuters indicate that the transaction has been valued at approximately £950 million ($1.27 billion), although Chelsea’s official announcement did not disclose financial terms. The reported figure relates to the interests being acquired from Boehly and Walter.
Despite the change in ownership control, Chelsea has stated that supporters should not expect immediate changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction. The club said Clearlake plans to build on the course already established by the ownership group.
The transaction therefore represents a significant shift in Chelsea’s corporate structure rather than an immediate overhaul of its football operations. Clearlake, which has been the club’s majority owner since 2022, now moves from majority ownership to full control, while Boehly and Walter leave their ownership positions and Wyss remains involved as a stakeholder.
