Suspected members of the Lakurawa armed group and rival bandits reportedly engaged in a fierce gun battle in a forested area of Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, with multiple casualties feared on both sides.
Security and local sources said the confrontation occurred in the Tapkin Giyayya axis after a group of armed bandits allegedly crossed into the Mashegu forest from neighbouring Zamfara State through the Tudun Magaji corridor.
According to the sources, the encounter quickly escalated into an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted for several hours. Several fighters from both groups were reportedly killed, while others were seen retreating into the forest with gunshot wounds.
The exact number of those killed or injured had not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The latest confrontation comes amid growing security concerns over the activities of the Lakurawa group in parts of Niger State. In recent weeks, residents of communities in Mashegu Local Government Area have reported increased sightings of suspected Lakurawa fighters, prompting fears that the group is expanding its presence in the region.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the reported clash.
The forests spanning parts of Niger and Zamfara states have become a hotspot for violent confrontations involving armed groups, including bandit factions and extremist elements. Security agencies have continued military and intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and restoring security across the affected areas.
