Gunfire erupted late on Saturday night in Obajana town, Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, following an exchange of gunfire between Nigerian troops and suspected terrorists, as security forces intensified clearance operations in the area.
The confrontation reportedly occurred when troops on routine and intelligence-driven patrol encountered armed suspects believed to be part of a criminal or terrorist network operating within the forested axis surrounding Obajana. The encounter quickly escalated into a gun duel, forcing residents to stay indoors for safety.
Security sources said the operation forms part of a sustained military effort to flush out armed groups exploiting the terrain around Obajana and neighbouring communities, which have in recent months witnessed incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and violent criminal activity.
Although details of casualties were not immediately disclosed, the troops were said to have maintained tactical superiority, compelling the suspects to retreat into nearby bushes after intense gunfire. No official report of civilian casualties has been recorded as of the time of filing this report.
The Nigerian Army has continued to strengthen its presence in Kogi State, particularly along strategic routes such as the Obajana–Lokoja and Kabba–Obajana corridors, which are considered critical for both economic activities and security stability in the North-Central region.
Obajana, home to major industrial facilities and a key transit point, has increasingly become a focus of security operations due to concerns that armed groups fleeing pressure from neighbouring states may be attempting to establish hideouts in the area.
Security analysts note that ongoing operations in Kogi are part of a broader regional strategy aimed at preventing the spread of terrorism and banditry from the North-West and North-Central zones into relatively calmer states.
Residents of the town commended the swift response of the military but expressed concerns over recurring security scares, calling on authorities to sustain operations until the area is completely secured.
Reports from conflict and security monitoring platform Zagazola have consistently highlighted the movement of armed groups across state borders, underscoring the need for coordinated inter-state security action to dismantle criminal networks.
Meanwhile, security agencies have reassured the public of their commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to remain calm, cooperate with troops, and promptly report suspicious movements as clearance operations continue across Obajana and surrounding communities.
