Three members of the House of Representatives from Kaduna State have officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their defection was announced on Tuesday during plenary by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who read their letters of resignation from the PDP and declaration for the APC.
The lawmakers who made the switch are Aliyu Abdullahi representing Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency, Abdulkareem Ahmed representing Kaduna South Federal Constituency, and Sadiq Abdullahi, the member representing Sabon Gari Federal Constituency.
The defection was witnessed by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, who was present in the Green Chamber as the letters were formally read out, a rare moment that drew attention from both ruling and opposition lawmakers.
In their separate letters, the defectors attributed their decision to the deepening crisis and factional divisions within the PDP, which they claimed had made it impossible to continue pursuing the aspirations of their constituents under the party’s platform.
According to them, joining the APC was a step toward aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and ensuring better collaboration between the federal and state governments in addressing developmental challenges in Kaduna State.
However, the Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, raised a constitutional point of order, arguing that internal wrangling in a party does not amount to a division as recognized by the constitution to warrant a defection. Despite his protest, the Deputy Speaker noted his objection but ruled that the defections be recognized by the House.
The defection brings another political boost to the APC, which continues to consolidate its hold across key northern states ahead of future elections.
Political analysts say the move may further weaken the PDP’s influence in Kaduna, particularly as the ruling party strengthens its grassroots presence under Governor Uba Sani’s leadership.
