Morocco’s U-20 team etched their name in football history on Sunday night after defeating Argentina 2–0 in the final of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Santiago, Chile.
The victory makes Morocco only the second African nation to win the youth world title, following Ghana’s triumph in 2009.
The Atlas Cubs stunned six-time champions Argentina with an early strike from Yassir Zabiri, who curled home a brilliant free-kick in the 12th minute before sealing the win with a composed finish in the 28th.
Despite Argentina’s dominance in possession, Morocco’s disciplined defence held firm until the final whistle, sparking wild celebrations both in Santiago and across the kingdom.
Morocco’s path to glory was built on resilience and tactical brilliance. They topped a group that included Brazil and Spain, edged out South Korea in the Round of 16, defeated the United States in the quarter-finals, and overcame France on penalties in a tense semi-final.
Their campaign showcased the strength of Morocco’s football academies and the success of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s long-term investment in youth development.
The win marks a new dawn for African football, proving once again that the continent can compete at the highest levels. As the young Atlas Cubs lifted the trophy, the moment symbolised not just victory for Morocco, but renewed hope for the future of African football on the global stage.
