The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye (or Akinleye) Femi, following a tragic incident at the Wawa Military Cantonment in Niger State.
According to a statement by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 22 Armoured Brigade, the incident occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
The Army says Femi, who was serving in the 221 Battalion stationed at Wawa Cantonment, is suspected to have killed his wife before taking his own life.
The bodies of the couple were discovered in their quarters Block 15, Room 24, in the Corporals and Below Quarters section of the cantonment.
In the statement, the Army said preliminary investigation showed that Femi had been on duty and had requested permission from his superior to tend to personal matters before resuming duties. The statement also noted that the remains of both deceased individuals have been preserved, while a more in-depth inquiry has been launched to uncover the full circumstances of the case.
The Army expressed its deep regret over the incident and extended condolences to the families, colleagues, and associates of the deceased.
Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and that outcome would be made public.
Residents and fellow soldiers in the barracks reportedly remain in shock over the tragedy, with tension and sorrow pervading the cantonment.
