ABUJA — Nigeria’s legal profession has welcomed 68 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) following their formal swearing-in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, at a ceremony in Abuja on Monday, October 12, 2026.
The ceremony, held at the Supreme Court as part of activities marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 legal year, formally admitted the successful recipients into one of the most prestigious ranks in the country’s legal profession. The distinction recognises exceptional professional achievement in legal advocacy and scholarship.
The newly elevated group comprises 67 legal practitioners and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri. Their elevation followed the consideration and approval of their applications by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), which is responsible for assessing candidates for the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
The LPPC considered the applications at its 174th plenary session held in Abuja on July 23, 2026. The swearing-in ceremony subsequently formalised the recipients’ admission to the rank, marking a significant milestone in their professional careers.
The SAN designation is widely regarded as a major distinction in Nigeria’s legal system. It recognises practitioners who have demonstrated the requisite professional competence, experience and standing, while the academic category provides recognition for outstanding contributions to legal scholarship.
The elevation also comes with expectations of exemplary professional conduct. Senior Advocates are expected to uphold the dignity of the courts, maintain high ethical standards, demonstrate integrity in their dealings and contribute meaningfully to the administration of justice.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s administration of the ceremony underscored the judiciary’s role in the conferment process and the importance of maintaining standards within the legal profession. The rank carries prestige, but it also places its holders under greater public scrutiny as senior members of the Bar.
The inclusion of Professor Obiaraeri highlights the importance of legal research, teaching and scholarship in strengthening Nigeria’s justice system. Legal academics contribute to the development of jurisprudence, the interpretation of statutes and the intellectual foundations of legal practice.
The latest appointments add 68 distinguished recipients to the ranks of Senior Advocates of Nigeria. Their elevation is both an individual professional achievement and a reminder of the responsibilities that accompany recognition at the highest levels of the legal profession.
