Tanimu Turaki, a factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been arraigned before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama over allegations of providing false information to law enforcement authorities.
Turaki, who holds the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was formally charged following a petition said to have been written on October 5, 2022. The prosecution alleges that the petition falsely accused one Saidi Mainasara, with the intention of prompting police action against him.
The case is being prosecuted by the office of the Nigeria Police Force under the authority of the Inspector-General of Police.
At Wednesday’s proceedings, Turaki entered a plea of not guilty after the charge was read in open court. His legal team subsequently applied for bail, which the court granted in the sum of ₦100 million, alongside conditions that typically include the provision of sureties.
The court did not immediately fix a date for the commencement of trial but is expected to do so as proceedings continue.
The development adds another layer to the ongoing internal disputes within the PDP, as factional leadership tussles continue to shape the party’s national outlook. Meanwhile, legal analysts note that the charge of providing false information to the police, if proven, carries significant legal consequences under Nigerian law.
Further updates are expected as the matter progresses in court.
