The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the severe traffic gridlock on the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway, particularly along the Greenville to Obasanjo Farm axis, to a post-holiday surge in vehicular movement and the resumption of ongoing road construction works.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Kaduna State, Corps Commander Tijjani Iliyasu, disclosed this on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna. He explained that the congestion was largely anticipated, given the increased travel following the Christmas and New Year holidays.
According to Iliyasu, the return of construction activities by the company handling the road project has also contributed to the traffic situation, as some road diversions that were earlier removed have now been reinstated.
However, he noted that driver behaviour remains a major challenge, citing poor lane discipline and impatience among motorists as key factors worsening the gridlock.
“There is no need for panic. Personnel of the FRSC and the Nigerian Army are already on ground working to manage the situation,” he said, urging motorists to remain calm, obey traffic regulations, and exercise caution while using the route.
The FRSC reassured road users that traffic control measures are being intensified to ease the congestion and ensure safety along the affected stretch of the expressway.
