A tragic road accident in Lagos has claimed the life of a dispatch rider after he was fatally crushed by a tanker along a major highway, further highlighting the persistent dangers posed by heavy-duty vehicles on the state’s busy roads.
The incident occurred around the Motorways axis inward Estate, Alapere, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where an unidentified dispatch rider was reportedly rammed into by a fast-moving tanker.
According to preliminary findings by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the tanker driver, who was operating an empty NIPCO tanker, was travelling at excessive speed when he collided with the moving motorcycle. The impact of the crash was described as devastating, killing the rider instantly and leaving bystanders in shock.
“The devastating impact resulted in the instantaneous death of the rider,” LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed, noting that the accident cast a sombre mood over the area.
Tensions quickly escalated at the scene as fellow dispatch riders and sympathisers gathered in anger. In the aftermath of the fatal crash, the tanker driver was reportedly attacked and injured by irate colleagues of the deceased, who protested what they described as reckless driving.
Authorities have attributed the crash primarily to excessive speeding, a recurring factor in many tanker-related accidents across Lagos. Emergency responders and traffic officials were deployed to the scene to restore order and manage traffic flow disrupted by the incident.
The fatality adds to a growing list of accidents involving tankers and commercial motorcyclists in Lagos, raising renewed concerns over road safety compliance, enforcement of speed limits, and the conduct of heavy-duty vehicle operators.
Road safety experts continue to call for stricter regulations, improved monitoring, and better training for tanker drivers to prevent further loss of lives on Nigeria’s highways.
