SSANU, NASU to Stage One-Day Protest Thursday Over Unresolved Demands

Posted on October 8, 2025October 8, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on SSANU, NASU to Stage One-Day Protest Thursday Over Unresolved Demands

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced a one–day nationwide protest for Thursday, October 9, 2025, citing the Federal Government’s continued failure to address their outstanding demands.

The unions, acting under their Joint Action Committee (JAC), stated that despite multiple ultimatums and negotiations, the government has not fulfilled key commitments. Their demands include:

An alleged unfair disbursement of a ₦50 billion “earned allowances” fund, where they argue non-academic staff have been shortchanged relative to academic staff.

Delays in renegotiating the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement, which they say governs terms of service, promotion, and welfare.

Non-payment of two months’ outstanding salaries.

Arrears from approved salary increments of 25 % and 35 % that remain unpaid.

Non-remittance of third-party deductions (such as pension contributions, cooperatives, health insurance) for May and June 2022.

These unresolved grievances, the unions argue, have placed non-academic university workers under severe financial and psychological strain.

The decision to protest follows the expiration of a series of deadlines. Initially, the JAC issued a seven-day ultimatum on September 15, 2025, which was later extended by 14 days to October 6.
Two meetings of a government convened Joint Consultative Committee on September 19 and October 6 reportedly yielded minimal progress. In a circular dated October 6, signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions ordered branches across the country to mobilise for the protest.

The circular, titled “Commencement of Protest Actions,” directs all university and inter-university centres to hold emergency joint congresses on Wednesday, October 8, to galvanise members for the planned demonstration. Participation by all union members is expected.
