Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday marked Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day with a strong defence of democratic governance, a tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, and a renewed commitment to economic reforms, national security, and institutional development.
Addressing a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja, the President described Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic journey as a testament to the resilience and determination of its people, noting that the country has now recorded 27 consecutive years of civilian rule.
Tinubu paid glowing tribute to the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices helped secure the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. He emphasized that Democracy Day remains a solemn reminder of the courage displayed by citizens who resisted authoritarian rule and fought for the restoration of democratic governance.
The President also recognized the contributions of members of the pro-democracy movement, civil society groups, journalists, and political leaders who played significant roles during Nigeria’s democratic struggle. As part of the commemoration, he announced national honours for several individuals whose efforts contributed to the advancement of democracy in the country.
Reflecting on the state of the nation, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic transformation, describing ongoing reforms as necessary steps toward building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. He acknowledged the challenges associated with the reform process but maintained that the measures are designed to create long-term economic stability, improve public finances, attract investment, and expand opportunities for citizens.
The President further highlighted ongoing security operations across various parts of the country, assuring Nigerians that the government remains determined to tackle insecurity and protect lives and property. According to him, the nation’s security agencies continue to make progress against criminal elements threatening peace and stability.
Tinubu stressed that democracy extends beyond elections, insisting that accountable governance, respect for the rule of law, citizen participation, and social justice remain essential pillars of the democratic system. He urged public office holders and citizens alike to remain committed to the ideals that inspired the June 12 struggle.
The President also called for national unity, urging Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and political differences in pursuit of collective progress. He expressed confidence in the country’s future and encouraged citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and fostering sustainable development.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. The date was officially adopted as Democracy Day in 2018 to commemorate the legacy of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and the broader struggle for democratic rule.
As the nation commemorated the historic occasion, President Tinubu reiterated his pledge to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and continue pursuing policies aimed at delivering economic growth, security, and improved living standards for all citizens.
