Trump Administration Imposes $100,000 Annual Fee for H-1B Visa Applications

Posted on September 20, 2025September 20, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Trump Administration Imposes $100,000 Annual Fee for H-1B Visa Applications

President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping executive proclamation that will dramatically reshape the United States’ H-1B visa program by imposing a $100,000 annual application fee on each foreign worker sponsored by U.S. employers.

The order, which takes effect September 21, 2025, represents one of the most aggressive moves yet by the Trump administration to curb the inflow of high-skilled immigrant labor and is already sending shockwaves through the tech and consulting industries that rely heavily on international talents.

Under the new policy, every company seeking to hire or retain a foreign professional on an H-1B visa must pay the six-figure fee each year for every sponsored employee.

While the proclamation allows limited, case-by-case exemptions if the Department of Homeland Security deems a hire to be in the national interest, the default requirement is universal and immediate.

The measure will initially run for twelve months but can be extended at the president’s discretion.
The White House says the steep fee is designed to end what it calls “systemic abuse” of the H-1B program, which critics argue has been used to undercut wages and displace American workers, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and math roles.

“We are putting American workers first,” the proclamation declares, framing the decision as both an economic safeguard and a national security imperative.

The impact has been swift. Major U.S. technology firms, including Amazon, Microsoft, and JPMorgan, have urged employees on H-1B and similar visas who are currently outside the country to return before the deadline to avoid new costs and potential disruptions.

Immigration attorneys warn that the $100,000 levy far exceeds typical administrative fees allowed by law, setting the stage for legal challenges over the president’s authority to impose it without congressional approval.

Analysts predict the fee will sharply reduce the number of H-1B applications, forcing employers to be more selective and potentially driving up salaries for the limited foreign workers they can afford to retain.

For many international professionals, particularly from India and China, the two largest sources of H-1B talent, the decision could upend career plans and create fresh uncertainty around America’s role as a global magnet for skilled workers.

As businesses scramble to calculate the financial and operational consequences, one thing is clear: the Trump administration has dramatically raised the cost of hiring foreign talent, reshaping the landscape for immigration and employment in the United States.
