A disturbing incident involving a University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) student has left the campus and wider Nigerian public in shock. A 200-level engineering student, Emmanuel Gambo, has been arrested for the alleged murder of 22-year-old Deborah Sam-Praise Ememem following a disagreement over a ₦15,000 sex transaction.
Sex-for-Cash Deal Turns Deadly in Nsukka Hotel
According to a statement from the Enugu State Police Command, the tragic event occurred on June 14, 2025, when the suspect and the victim checked into a hotel in the Obukpa area of Nsukka. Police reports indicate that the two had a prior agreement involving ₦5,000 for sex, but after the second round, the young woman demanded an additional ₦15,000, which allegedly led to a heated argument.
In a chilling confession, Gambo admitted to strangling the victim during the dispute. He then wrapped her body in a bedsheet and hid it under the hotel bed before fleeing the scene.
Body Discovered Two Days Later
Hotel staff discovered Deborah’s decomposing body on June 16, after detecting a foul smell from the room. Authorities were notified, and a full-scale homicide investigation was launched. Surveillance footage and digital intelligence led police to the suspect, who was tracked and arrested at his student lodge in Nsukka on July 2.
Police Recover Victim’s Belongings
Upon arrest, police recovered several items belonging to the deceased, including her iPhone, a tablet device, earbuds, and a bottle of wine. Gambo reportedly led detectives to where these items were hidden. The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Enugu for further action.
Police Condemn Act, Warn Against Risky Youth Behavior
In a public statement, SP Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, described the murder as “callous and inexcusable.” He urged students and Nigerian youths to avoid risky lifestyles and casual sexual relationships that could lead to violent outcomes.
UNN Community in Mourning
While the university has not yet issued an official statement, students at UNN are mourning the loss of one of their own. Social media tributes and candlelight vigils have described Deborah as “vibrant, warm-hearted, and full of life.” The incident has triggered discussions around campus safety, sex-for-money culture, and emotional regulation among students.
Youth Violence and Casual Sex Culture Under Scrutiny
This tragic case has raised serious questions about the growing trend of sex-for-cash deals among students, poor conflict resolution, and the mental health challenges plaguing Nigeria’s young population. With the suspect in custody and investigations ongoing, the public awaits justice for Deborah, while many call for improved moral education and behavioral awareness on campuses nationwide.
