Abuja — The National Assembly premises witnessed heightened drama and tight security on Monday, July 22, as suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was denied access to the Senate chambers despite a court ruling she claims authorizes her reinstatement.
The senator, representing Kogi Central, arrived at the National Assembly complex around noon, flanked by supporters, legal aides, and notable civic voices including activist Aisha Yesufu. Her attempted return comes after a Federal High Court judgment on July 4 declared her six-month suspension unconstitutional and directed her reinstatement.
Undeterred by weeks of Senate resistance, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had written formally to the Senate President and the Clerk of the National Assembly notifying them of her intention to resume duties on July 22.
However, access was firmly denied as security personnel—comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Sergeant-at-Arms—mounted a coordinated blockade.
All entry points into the complex were locked down, with officers stationed at strategic positions to prevent her from reaching the Senate wing. She was forced to retreat after a brief standoff.
Earlier in the day, her legal team notified the Inspector General of Police of her planned resumption, requesting the restoration of her official security detail in light of the court ruling and alleged threats to her safety. The letter, which emphasized the legal implication of the court’s pronouncement, is yet to receive a public response.

Despite her physical presence at the Assembly, the Senate has maintained that there is no binding legal directive compelling it to lift her suspension prematurely.
Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, reiterated on Sunday that the Senate stands by its decision and is yet to receive the certified true copy of the court judgment for official review. He insisted that the court’s pronouncement did not amount to an enforceable order, and that legislative procedures remain internal matters.
Senator Natasha’s legal counsel, however, argues otherwise. Senior Advocate of Nigeria, West Idahosa, has stated that the language of the court ruling—particularly the phrase “IT IS HEREBY ORDERED”—clearly implies that she must be allowed to return to legislative duties. According to him, the court not only nullified the suspension but also emphasized that a senator cannot be barred from their duties for 180 days, which he described as unconstitutional and excessive.
Tensions are rising as legal interpretations clash with parliamentary protocol, and observers await the Senate’s next move. Meanwhile, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to continue seeking justice, describing her suspension as a violation of both her mandate and the democratic process.
As of press time, plenary was underway inside the chambers, without her participation.
