In an unexpected turn of events, AC Milan have officially scrapped their proposed move to sign Nigerian striker Victor Okoh Boniface on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, citing concerns after the medical examinations did not meet the club’s stringent standards.
Background of the Agreement
The Serie A giants had reached a verbal agreement for a season-long loan deal, including a €5 million loan fee and a €24 million purchase option. Following the verbal agreement, Boniface traveled to Milan for medicals, which are commonly the final step in formalizing a transfer.
Medical Concerns Lead to Cancellation
Reports now confirm Milan’s decision to withdraw is grounded in the medical findings. Notably, Boniface has undergone two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgeries, leading to lingering stability issues in his right knee. Medical sources point to weakened strength and stability in the operated knee, red flags that meant the club could not justify moving forward.
Despite undergoing four separate medical examinations at La Madonnina clinic, Centro Ambrosiano, and the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute, Milan’s medical team remained unconvinced.

Reactions and Next Steps
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the deal was off, noting that Boniface would be returning to Germany following the failed medical. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes echoed this sentiment, stating, “If he comes back to Leverkusen, the AC Milan deal will be over. That’s no big secret.”
What’s Next for Milan and Boniface?
With the deal off the table, AC Milan are now refocusing their transfer efforts. Reports indicate the club is exploring Sporting CP’s Conrad Harder and Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund as alternate options to bolster their attacking line-up.
Boniface, meanwhile, heads back to Bayer Leverkusen, where he remains contracted through 2028. The future remains uncertain, but his return to Germany brings continuity as he prepares for the season ahead.
