FG Halts Christian Pilgrimages to Israel Over Escalating Middle East Tensions

Posted on March 4, 2026March 4, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on FG Halts Christian Pilgrimages to Israel Over Escalating Middle East Tensions

The Federal Government has announced the suspension of Christian pilgrimages to Israel and surrounding areas in the Middle East following rising security concerns in the region. The decision was made public on Tuesday, with authorities citing the deteriorating situation and the need to safeguard Nigerian citizens traveling abroad for religious purposes.

The directive was conveyed through the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), the statutory body responsible for coordinating Christian pilgrimages from Nigeria. The Commission stated that the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in force until conditions in the affected areas are considered safe for travel.

According to the NCPC, the action became necessary due to heightened tensions and emergency measures declared in Israel amid the ongoing Middle East crisis. The government emphasized that the safety and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims remain paramount and that it would be irresponsible to allow further travel under prevailing security uncertainties.

The suspension applies to all categories of pilgrimages, including those organized directly by the Commission and those arranged by licensed private tour operators. Officials clarified that no new batches of pilgrims will be airlifted to Israel or neighboring destinations until a comprehensive security review indicates improved stability.

The announcement came shortly after the successful completion of the 2025 main Christian pilgrimage exercise. The final batch of Nigerian pilgrims returned safely to the country earlier this week, marking the conclusion of months of coordinated travel to holy sites in Israel and Jordan.

The last group of over 500 pilgrims arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, bringing to a close an exercise that reportedly airlifted more than 4,000 Nigerians to the Holy Land since late December 2025. The Commission described the operation as successful and incident-free despite the emerging tensions toward the end of the pilgrimage season.

In its statement, the NCPC expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support of pilgrimage activities, as well as to the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, for their backing of the Commission’s programs over the past two years.

Religious leaders associated with the pilgrimage exercise also appealed to Nigerians, particularly the Christian community, to pray for peace in Jerusalem and across the broader Middle East. They stressed that pilgrimage remains a deeply spiritual journey, but one that must not compromise the safety of participants.

Observers note that the suspension reflects a broader global response to security advisories linked to the ongoing regional tensions. Several countries have reportedly reviewed or adjusted travel plans to parts of the Middle East as governments reassess the risks facing their citizens.

For now, the Federal Government maintains that the suspension is a precautionary measure rather than a permanent cancellation of pilgrimage activities. The NCPC assured intending pilgrims that it will continue to monitor developments closely and will provide timely updates once the situation improves and travel to the Holy Land can safely resume.
