A former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has declared that an alleged attempt to seize control of the party has failed, citing a recent court ruling as decisive.
Speaking in reaction to the judgment, Kachikwu maintained that the legal outcome has effectively halted what he described as a “backdoor takeover” of the ADC structure by individuals he insists are not legitimate members of the party.
The development is the latest twist in a prolonged leadership crisis that has engulfed the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. The dispute centres on competing claims to the party’s leadership and control, particularly following the emergence of a coalition of opposition figures seeking to reposition the party as a major challenger in the next presidential race.
Kachikwu has consistently argued that the crisis goes beyond routine internal disagreements, alleging that “outsiders” attempted to hijack the party’s structures for political advantage. He insisted that such actions violate the ADC constitution and undermine democratic principles.
The controversy intensified after a faction reportedly held a national convention despite a subsisting court order directing parties to maintain the status quo pending determination of a suit filed by ADC state chairmen. Kachikwu’s camp rejected the convention, describing it as illegal and lacking legal standing.
According to him, the latest court pronouncement reinforces his position that due process must be followed and that any attempt to impose leadership outside constitutional provisions is null and void.
The ADC crisis has been marked by multiple factions, expulsions, and legal battles, with party stakeholders sharply divided over its future direction. The situation has also drawn attention to broader legal questions around judicial intervention in intra-party disputes, especially under the Electoral Act 2026.

Kachikwu reiterated that while political parties operate internal mechanisms, the courts retain authority to intervene in cases involving alleged illegality or constitutional breaches within party structures.
As legal proceedings continue and political alignments ahead of 2027 evolve, the struggle for control of the ADC appears far from over, despite the latest ruling which Kachikwu says has stalled any immediate takeover attempt.
