Nigeria’s apex court, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, has fixed a date to deliver judgment in the protracted leadership disputes rocking two major opposition parties—the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The court, after hearing final arguments from all parties involved, reserved judgment and announced that its decision would be delivered shortly, with reports indicating the ruling is expected imminently following the conclusion of proceedings.
The cases stem from deep internal divisions within both parties, which have led to multiple legal battles across various courts. In the PDP, the dispute revolves around the legality of its 2025 national convention, which lower courts had nullified over procedural violations and failure to comply with statutory guidelines.
A faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki is challenging those rulings at the Supreme Court, seeking validation of the convention and recognition of its leadership structure.
Similarly, the ADC crisis involves competing claims to the party’s national leadership, with a faction led by former Senate President David Mark contesting earlier court decisions that affected the party’s hierarchy.
Mark’s appeal, alongside those from PDP factions, challenges judgments of the Court of Appeal and Federal High Court, which had issued orders impacting party leadership and operations.
Legal analysts note that the Supreme Court’s impending verdict is expected to provide definitive clarity on the legitimacy of the rival factions in both parties. The outcome could also significantly shape political alignments and preparations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The prolonged disputes have already created uncertainty within the opposition, with party members and aspirants awaiting the court’s final decision to determine their political direction.
With the date now set, attention has shifted to the apex court, whose ruling is widely seen as crucial in resolving the leadership crises and stabilising the internal structures of both parties.
