FG Declares Friday, June 12 Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

Posted on June 11, 2026June 11, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on FG Declares Friday, June 12 Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to democratic governance and the enduring legacy of the June 12 struggle.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey and to honour the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country’s history. The day also serves as a tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled election whose struggle became a symbol of Nigeria’s quest for democratic rule.

The declaration of the public holiday is in line with the Federal Government’s annual observance of Democracy Day, which has been officially celebrated on June 12 since 2019 following an amendment to the Public Holidays Act. Prior to the change, Democracy Day was marked on May 29, the date that commemorated Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999.

As part of the Democracy Day celebrations, Nigerians are expected to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress, the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, and the collective responsibility of citizens in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national unity.

The public holiday will provide workers, students, and businesses across the country an opportunity to participate in activities marking the occasion and to celebrate 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.

Democracy Day remains one of Nigeria’s most significant national observances, symbolizing the resilience of the country’s democratic ideals and the determination of its people to uphold freedom, justice, and good governance.
