Bandits Impose Fresh Levies on 26 Sokoto Communities, Bar Farmers from Farmlands

Posted on June 15, 2026June 15, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Bandits Impose Fresh Levies on 26 Sokoto Communities, Bar Farmers from Farmlands

Residents of no fewer than 26 communities in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State have reportedly begun raising money to meet fresh levies imposed by armed bandits who have also prohibited them from accessing their farmlands ahead of the rainy season farming activities.

According to residents familiar with the development, the bandits issued a three-day ultimatum to affected communities, warning that farmers must stay away from their farms until the demanded payments are made. The threat comes at a critical period when many farmers are preparing for cultivation as the wet season begins.

Sources within the area disclosed that the affected communities include Garin Faji, Cina Barka, Zululu, Dan Gari, Garin Maigayya, Gardi, Katsira, Garin Baushe, Sulmawa, Zakin Ganga, Dan Kware, Garje, Dogon Faru, Son Allah, Garin Galadima, Kafchi, Matabaya, Garin Labo, Zango, Kaifin Aska, Tsauna Dogo, Tudun Wada, Rambadawa, Ga Itace, Nasarawa, and Garin Idi.

A resident who maintains contact with several of the affected villages said the armed groups warned that anyone found working on their farm before the levies are paid could face severe consequences, including abduction or death. The source added that kidnapped victims would only regain their freedom upon payment of substantial ransoms.

Faced with the threats, many residents have reportedly started contributing funds collectively in an effort to meet the demands and avert possible attacks. A farmer from Zululu community, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said he had planned to begin farming activities but was forced to suspend the plan after learning about the directive issued by the bandits.

The latest development highlights the persistent insecurity confronting communities in eastern Sokoto, particularly in Sabon Birni, which has experienced repeated attacks, kidnappings, and extortion by armed groups over the years. Security challenges in the area have continued to affect farming activities, livelihoods, and food production, with many residents expressing fears over their safety and economic survival.

The renewed restrictions on farming have raised concerns about potential impacts on agricultural output and food security in the region if residents remain unable to cultivate their lands during the current planting season. Community members have continued to call for stronger security interventions to protect lives and restore confidence among farmers.
