Nigeria’s Healthcare System Faces Severe Manpower Crisis, Doctors Raise Alarm

Posted on June 18, 2026June 18, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Nigeria’s Healthcare System Faces Severe Manpower Crisis, Doctors Raise Alarm

Medical doctors in Nigeria have sounded a fresh warning over what they describe as a growing healthcare manpower crisis, revealing that only about 55,000 doctors are currently available to cater to a population exceeding 220 million people. The development has heightened concerns about the capacity of the nation’s health sector to meet the medical needs of citizens amid the continued migration of healthcare professionals abroad.

The alarm was raised during the Ordinary General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos. The conference, themed “Too Few Doctors, Too Many Patients: The Consequences of Manpower Shortage on the Mental Well-being of Nigerians,” focused on the far-reaching effects of the shortage of medical personnel on healthcare delivery across the country.

According to medical experts at the event, the persistent exodus of healthcare workers, popularly referred to as the “Japa” phenomenon, has significantly weakened Nigeria’s health system. They noted that thousands of doctors have left the country in recent years in search of better working conditions, improved remuneration, and greater career opportunities abroad.

Data from the Federal Ministry of Health indicate that more than 16,000 Nigerian doctors have emigrated within the last five to seven years. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, had earlier disclosed that the country’s doctor-to-population ratio has dropped to approximately 3.9 doctors per 10,000 people—far below internationally recommended standards.

Health stakeholders warn that the shortage is particularly devastating in specialized fields such as mental healthcare. Experts estimate that over 40 million Nigerians are living with mental health conditions, yet a large majority lack access to adequate psychiatric services due to insufficient medical personnel and limited healthcare infrastructure. Reports suggest that nearly 85 percent of Nigerians with mental health disorders do not receive the treatment they require.

The dwindling workforce has also increased pressure on doctors who remain in the country. Medical professionals report longer working hours, rising burnout rates, and mounting workloads in public hospitals, especially in underserved rural communities where access to healthcare remains limited. Studies and health sector reports have consistently linked the shortage of doctors to declining service delivery and growing challenges in patient care.

Industry observers argue that unless urgent measures are taken to improve working conditions, strengthen medical infrastructure, and provide incentives to retain healthcare professionals, Nigeria could face even greater difficulties in achieving universal health coverage and addressing the healthcare needs of its rapidly growing population.

The latest warning adds to ongoing national discussions about healthcare reform and workforce retention, with experts urging government at all levels to prioritize investments that can stem the tide of medical migration and rebuild confidence in the country’s health sector.
