A wave of grief has swept across Ghana following the sudden death of a young lawyer, Sara Araba Tettey, who reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest while celebrating the Black Stars’ dramatic victory over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Tettey, 26, was said to have collapsed shortly after Ghana secured a late 1-0 win over Panama in their opening Group L match on June 17. The decisive goal came deep into stoppage time through Caleb Yirenkyi, sparking jubilant celebrations among Ghanaian supporters.
According to reports, the young legal practitioner was watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel in Bomso, near the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi when she suddenly became unresponsive amid the celebrations.
Friends and bystanders reportedly rushed her to KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel fought to save her life. Sources indicated that doctors administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about 45 minutes, but she was later pronounced dead.
Tettey was a graduate of KNUST’s Faculty of Law and had recently been called to the Ghana Bar. She was working with O & A Legal Consult in Kumasi and was widely regarded by colleagues and friends as a promising young professional with a bright future ahead.
News of her sudden passing has triggered an outpouring of condolences across social media, with many expressing shock that a moment of national celebration ended in tragedy. Friends and former classmates described her as intelligent, compassionate, hardworking, and full of promise.
The incident has cast a shadow over Ghana’s successful start to its World Cup campaign. The Black Stars secured the victory through Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time strike and are now preparing for their next Group L encounter against England.
Meanwhile, Tettey’s body has reportedly been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy and funeral arrangements. Authorities have not yet released an official medical report on the cause of death beyond the reported cardiac arrest.
