The Ogun State Government has expressed concern over the sharp rise in mental health cases across the state, revealing that more than 10,000 patients received treatment within the first half of 2025.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, disclosed this in Abeokuta during an event marking World Mental Health Day, noting that about 1,000 were new cases, while the rest were follow-up visits across four key centres in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Ilaro, and Ota.
She identified common conditions such as psychosis, depression, epilepsy, neurosis, and substance abuse disorders, stressing that the situation reflects a growing public health challenge worsened by stigma and poor access to care.
Dr. Coker said the government has set up a 26-member Mental Health Action Committee to expand access to treatment and promote public awareness. She urged residents to seek help early and stop discriminating against people with mental health issues.
Quoting World Health Organization data, she noted that one in four people will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime, adding that over 90% of Nigerians with such conditions do not receive adequate care.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the Dapo Abiodun administration to make mental health services accessible, affordable, and integrated into primary healthcare across the state.
