Kwara Poly Suspends Lecturer Over Viral Assault of IJMB Candidates

Posted on June 23, 2026June 23, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Kwara Poly Suspends Lecturer Over Viral Assault of IJMB Candidates

The management of Kwara State Polytechnic has suspended a lecturer captured in a viral video physically assaulting candidates of the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme on the institution’s premises.

The disciplinary action followed widespread public outrage after a video surfaced on social media showing the lecturer caning several candidates who were reportedly kneeling with their hands raised while receiving strokes on their palms. The incident quickly sparked criticism from students, education stakeholders, and members of the public who questioned the use of corporal punishment in a tertiary academic environment.

In a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garba, the Polytechnic clarified that the individuals seen in the footage were not regular students of the institution but candidates enrolled in the IJMB programme. According to the management, the candidates had reportedly arrived late for their ongoing examinations.

While noting that the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s actions were still under investigation, the institution condemned the method employed, describing it as inconsistent with its values and disciplinary standards.

The Polytechnic stressed that it does not condone violence or physical punishment as a means of correcting students, emphasizing that education should be founded on respect, understanding, and constructive guidance rather than intimidation or physical force.

Consequently, the lecturer has been relieved of his duties pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the incident. The institution assured stakeholders and members of the public that the matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves and that appropriate measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence.

The incident also drew condemnation from the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students. The association’s president, Akinteye Babatunde, described the lecturer’s conduct as unacceptable, arguing that students should never be subjected to physical abuse regardless of any disciplinary concerns. He called on the institution to thoroughly investigate the matter and impose appropriate sanctions where necessary.

The development has reignited discussions on acceptable disciplinary practices in higher institutions, with many stakeholders advocating student-centered approaches that uphold dignity, accountability, and respect for human rights.
