Unidentified gunmen launched a bold attack on the Aqua Triton Company farm in the Ogunmakin area of Ibadan, resulting in the death of a police officer and the abduction of a Chinese expatriate, police have confirmed.
The commando-style assault occurred on Friday, January 16, 2026, when a group of armed men stormed the agricultural facility located in Ogunmakin, a community on the outskirts of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
According to a statement from the Oyo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, security personnel on duty engaged the attackers in a gunfight. One police officer was fatally shot while attempting to repel the assailants, and some of the attackers were reportedly injured in the exchange.
Despite the resistance, the gunmen successfully abducted the Chinese expatriate, who is identified as the principal officer of the company. Police did not immediately disclose the name of the victim but confirmed that he was taken from the premises.
In response to the attack, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, ordered an urgent deployment of anti-kidnapping and tactical units to the scene. The police have launched a bush-combing operation and a comprehensive investigation to secure the safe release of the expatriate and apprehend the perpetrators.
Residents and workers in Ogunmakin and surrounding communities have been urged to cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could assist ongoing rescue and investigation efforts.
This incident adds to rising concerns over security threats to expatriates and security personnel in the South-West, particularly in rural and industrial zones where kidnappers and armed groups have become increasingly active.
