N1.3m Loan, N6.8m Repayment: Borrower Challenges FairMoney’s Loan Calculation

Posted on October 4, 2026October 4, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on N1.3m Loan, N6.8m Repayment: Borrower Challenges FairMoney’s Loan Calculation

A repayment dispute involving digital lender FairMoney has drawn attention after a Nigerian borrower challenged a reported ₦6.814 million repayment obligation arising from a loan facility originally valued at about ₦1.3 million. The complaint centres on how the balance was recalculated after the borrower obtained a further ₦500,000 top-up.

The borrower, identified in reports as Chukwuemeka Peter Madunagu, reportedly said he had already paid ₦442,868 toward the original facility before taking the additional ₦500,000. The precise terms of the original loan, the repayment schedule and the transaction history are central to determining how the eventual figure was reached.

According to correspondence cited by reports on the dispute, FairMoney stated that the original facility carried a 13.18 per cent monthly interest rate, while the subsequent top-up attracted a 20.14 per cent monthly rate. The lender reportedly gave the resulting total repayment obligation as ₦6,814,076.

Madunagu has disputed the calculation and reportedly questioned how the outstanding obligation from the first facility was treated when the top-up was granted. His complaint raises questions about the outstanding principal at the time of the top-up, interest already accrued, the new interest applicable to the additional borrowing and any other charges included in the final balance.

The figures themselves, however, do not establish that FairMoney improperly charged the borrower. Determining whether the ₦6.814 million figure is correct would require examination of the actual loan agreement, payment records, applicable rates, repayment period and the lender’s calculation or amortisation schedule. No regulatory finding establishing wrongdoing in this particular case has been identified in the sources reviewed.

FairMoney’s own published terms state that FairMoney Microfinance Bank is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and that its loan arrangements may comprise principal, interest and fees. Its current terms also describe FairMoney’s lending product as an open-end credit facility.

The dispute comes against the backdrop of increased regulation of digital lending in Nigeria. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) brought its Digital, Electronic, Online and Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations 2025 into effect on July 21, 2025, with the stated objective of promoting fairness, transparency and accountability in the digital lending market.

The FCCPC subsequently announced that enforcement against digital money lenders that had failed to regularise their status would begin after the January 5, 2026 compliance deadline. The Commission said the enforcement programme was intended to promote market discipline and protect consumers from abusive, deceptive or unlawful conduct.

There is therefore a legitimate regulatory context for questions about digital-loan transparency, but there is a distinction between that broader regulatory oversight and an investigation into this particular FairMoney complaint. The sources reviewed do not establish that the CBN or FCCPC has formally opened a case against FairMoney over Madunagu’s disputed repayment figure. FairMoney, meanwhile, has publicly said its product-development processes incorporate compliance, risk management, legal and consumer-protection considerations.

Ultimately, the key issue is whether every component of the ₦6.814 million demand can be reconciled with the terms accepted by the borrower. A complete loan ledger showing the original principal, payments already made, outstanding principal, accrued interest, top-up amount, applicable charges and repayment schedule would provide the clearest basis for resolving the dispute. Until such documentation or a regulatory determination establishes otherwise, the allegations should remain characterised as a borrower’s disputed account of the loan calculation, rather than proof of wrongdoing by FairMoney.
