Abaribe Defects from APGA to ADC in Fresh South-East Political Realignment

Posted on December 31, 2025December 31, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Abaribe Defects from APGA to ADC in Fresh South-East Political Realignment

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking another major shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defection was announced on Wednesday during a political gathering in Enugu, where Abaribe publicly declared his new political affiliation, ending months of speculation surrounding his relationship with the APGA leadership and his growing association with the ADC.

Abaribe, a seasoned lawmaker and former Senate Minority Leader, said his decision followed extensive consultations with political allies and supporters, noting that the move was driven by the need for a platform he believes offers stronger internal democracy and a clearer national outlook.

The senator, who only joined APGA in 2023 after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had been one of the party’s most prominent figures in the South-East, making his exit a significant blow to APGA’s national profile.

His defection also aligns with a broader wave of political realignments, particularly in the South-East, where politicians are increasingly reassessing party loyalties in response to shifting voter sentiments and preparations for the next electoral cycle.

The African Democratic Congress has recently gained renewed attention following the entry of several high-profile political actors, positioning the party as a potential rallying platform for opposition forces seeking alternatives to the dominant APC and PDP blocs.

Political observers say Abaribe’s move could strengthen ADC’s visibility and organizational structure in Abia State and the wider South-East, especially given his long-standing grassroots influence and legislative experience.

Before his formal exit, APGA’s Abia State chapter had publicly questioned Abaribe’s political direction, reflecting internal tensions that many analysts now see as a precursor to his eventual departure from the party.

Within the ADC, the defection is expected to trigger fresh strategic discussions, particularly on party leadership, state structures, and preparations for upcoming elections, as the party consolidates its growing list of influential members.

As the countdown to 2027 continues, Abaribe’s defection underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political environment, with alliances shifting rapidly and parties positioning themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive electoral season.
